Center of the Metaverse

seadragon.jpg

TED2007 - Blaise Aguera y Arcas, of Microsoft Live Labs, offers a stunning live presentation of Photosynth based on and used in conjunction with Seadragon technology, which Aguera y Arcas was a key architect.

I won't lie, the tech side of this whole thing makes me a little dizzy, but I'll try to nutshell it.

Basically (very basically) Seadragon technology delivers live imagery and text that is completely scaleable and only limited by a monitor's pixel limitations. So, for all intents and purposes what we view online with Seadragon has a virtually limitless resolution with zero image distortion - watch the demo.

Now, when you combine Seadragon with Photosynth strange and beautiful things happen. Photosynth culls images with similar data from all over the web maps their similarities and differences (angles, depth etc.) tags them with meta data and then creates multi-dimensional spaces in realtime. Or something like that. Again, watch the video.

This amazing demo aside, from a social standpoint, there is an opportunity here to learn from each other's visual experiences on a grand, even global scale as images from users all over the planet get compounded metadata attached to them and allow us the opportunity to explore, in unprecedented clarity, world around us.

One thing seems certain, they way we conceptualize, design, produce, display and view digital imagery is on the verge of major change.
