There Ain't No Free Ligatures

We've covered German publisher Gestalten here before but not from the perspective of its typographic offerings. While it doesn't release a large number of fonts, those it does choose to add to its modest collection always provide a new typographic twist. Why we mention this now is that Gestalten has just made Jens Gehlhaar's Old Style Figures Black available as a free download in a limited character set version.
The words "free font" are enough for most designers to begin heading for the exits, but hats off to Gestalten for having come up with a way to promote its typographic offerings, while providing something of value to the design community. There are now 13 fonts available for download in the Free Fonts section of its site, all of them provided in a single weight and without the full character set of the commercial versions. This way designers are free to use the fonts for real projects and develop a taste for them that may lead to an eventual purchase.
While some of the fonts are on the wild side ("experimental display fonts," as Gestalten terms them), the bold weight of Capricorn, shown above, is a sans serif with just interesting enough letterforms to provide impact when used for headlines. It's available for download in both Mac and PC versions.
