Run Like a Porsche

When you think of Porsche, your first thought is probably of sleek, precision-engineered, luxury sports cars, typically driven by middle-aged men with rich fantasy lives. Let's face it, if you're a male of driving age, you'd love to be zipping along in a Porsche at this very minute but the odds of this ever happening are pretty slim. However, thanks to the modern miracle of brand extension, you can at least partake in some small way of the world of the happy few, due to the work of Porsche Design.
Founded in 1972, the Austria-based Porsche Design Studio is responsible for creating "...one of the leading luxury brands in the high-quality men’s accessories business," with original designs reflecting the Porsche brand's own attributes of technical innovation, functionality and timelessness. Beyond success in the marketplace, Porsche Design products have snagged more than 100 design awards and prizes, with the latest bestowed this week by the 2008 red dot design award competition.
Honored for their innovative designs were the P’6750 Worldtimer watch, the P’8802 reading glasses, the P’7340 kitchen and the Bounce:S premium running shoe, shown above. The outcome of a collaboration between Porsche and Addidas, this sleek fellow uses a system of metallic springs, which we're told "...increases energy return and gives you a more efficient ride. Take it for a run and tap into a new level of energy and handling. Like the suspension of a sports car, Bounce:S hugs the pavement, enhancing your feel of the road."
The attempt to connect the experience of wearing the shoe to that of driving a Porsche is pretty blatant, but such reminders no doubt help customers simply blink at the price tag before pulling out their wallets. The Porsche Design site is worth a visit for perusing similar examples that echo the Porsche lifestyle. Me, I'll stick to my aging Peugeot, despite its lack of a branded fragrance.
