The Artist as Landscape

Just when you thought there was nothing left to say about the landscape genre, along comes a young Netherlands-based artist who turns things on their head—or rather, on his head. Levi van Veluw's recent Landscape series is the latest in which he uses himself as the canvas for a series of explorations that have resulted in a remarkable run of exhibitions and awards.

Van Veluw began his investigations into blurring the distinctions between the observer and the subject by simply drawing on himself with a ball-point pen, before moving on to covering himself with materials such as wood, stone and carpet. As the artist puts it, "I sit in front of a mirror with several objects and ideas. That day, the process takes shape, and slowly I create a new object I find interesting.”

Apparently he does everything himself, from the application of the materials to the photography. Beyond the striking nature of the resulting work, creating and documenting the more complex pieces so quickly is rather astonishing, especially in the case of the landscape shown above, which includes cows, cars, working electric lamps and a miniature train circling his head. It's well worth a trip to Van Veluw's site to check out his work, including a video of this landscape.
