Electromagnificent

elctrolights.jpg

A fixation on light and electricity has moved British Artist, Richard Box, to create some mesmerizing installation art pieces which he has had documented by various photographers on his Website.

The focus on Box's Site right now is is a series which illustrates an installation whereby Box erected more than a thousand fluorescent tubes by planting them in the ground beneath a large electrical pylon. The photographs show the the lights illuminated only by the magnetic field being generated by the pylon and overhead electricity cables.

Optical Volution

Captivating video from the Discovery Channel; starts with a block of optical glass, ends with a full lens assembly. Apparently it takes six full weeks to create a single lens.

Flash Dance

Another certain, ahem, major presence in the stock image industry has added a very cool project to their roster of sites, services and campaigns. This one commissioned five super talented designers/firms to devise interactive Flash applications that illustrate an interpretation off ten visual concepts all revolving around digital imagery. The results are in some cases quite stunning.

Frozen Treats

Stumbled across this cool series of shots by Martin Klimas, in which he captures single moments of amazing intesity, in each perfectly preserved millesecond. See them all at EveryoneForever.com.

Eye of the storm

jimreed.jpg

It's the time of year for many of us when we are often reminded of how little control we really have over our Universe as Mother Nature hints and nudges in her own subtle way at who is really in charge. The photographs of Jim Reed give us a small glimpse of what the old girl is capable of stirring up.

Center of the Metaverse

seadragon.jpg

TED2007 - Blaise Aguera y Arcas, of Microsoft Live Labs, offers a stunning live presentation of Photosynth based on and used in conjunction with Seadragon technology, which Aguera y Arcas was a key architect.

I won't lie, the tech side of this whole thing makes me a little dizzy, but I'll try to nutshell it.

Full Circle

fullcircle.jpg

This is a very cool Daily Dose of Imagery from Sam Javanrouh. A brilliant combination of panoramic photographs and some neat Photoshop trickery. Along with this image, the Iranian born photographer gives step-by-step instruction on how you can create your very own "little planet" like this one of Kings College Circle in Toronto, Canada. Also, if you click "day before" (top left) you can scroll back through many more of Javanrouh's daily doses of imagery. There are some truly stunning shots here that often highlight parts of his new hometown of Toronto, Canada.

Sam Javanrouh is also Creative Director at Optix digital pictures, a visual effects and animation company.

I Can Dig It.

When the uncommonly hip and powerfully creative minds of Alexandra Fisher and Kevin Johnson smashed into each other sometime in the late 90s the result was a somewhat understated "big bang" for designers and consumers alike. IMHO.

Picturepalooza

bapla.jpg

The BAPLA Picture Buyers Fair is the largest event of it's kind anywhere. This is the seventh year of the Fair and on May 9th and 10th vendors and buyers from all over the planet will congregate in London for this two-day conference, to buy and sell stock imagery.

Contests and raffles abound at these things and this year exhibitors are giving away everything from iPods to Madagascar vacations and even a VW. Plus there will be no end to the schwag giveaways I'm sure.

While I hear it's a killer show, I have yet to actually make the pilgrimage to BAPLA and unfortunately I don't get to go to London this year either. I will, however, see you at HOW in Atlanta, June 10th.
